... the sweet aroma of the knowledge of Christ in every place...
Merry Christmas Eve, my friends~ Â What a special day of the year this is as we imagine the final leg of the tiresome journey made by Mary and Joseph.
As we picture them going from place to place trying to find rest among a cramped and uncomfortable circumstance, burdened with pangs of approaching childbirth, we might wonder why God didn’t make better accommodations for them.  I certainly have wondered… just as I’ve often wondered why God hasn’t immediately delivered me from whatever difficult circumstance I happen to find myself in at the moment.  Why didn’t God make life just a little easier on Mary and Joseph and Jesus?  Why hasn’t God made life just a little easier for you and me??
I don’t know the full answer, but one thing the Lord is showing me is that if life was any easier for Mary, Joseph, and  Jesus, I wouldn’t KNOW that their every ounce of strength and provision came only from the Lord. Â
If God had chosen any practical human provisions for this Holy Night… then we might not know for sure that He can and will work in all circumstances, as pitiful as they might seem, to deliver LOVE and GLORY to His people. Â
O Holy Night
Christmas Hymn and Carol
O holy night! The stars are brightly shining,
It is the night of the dear Saviour’s birth.
Long lay the world in sin and error pining.
Till He appeared and the Spirit felt its worth.
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.
Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angel voices!
O night divine, the night when Christ was born;
O night, O holy night, O night divine!
O night, O holy night, O night divine!Led by the light of faith serenely beaming,
With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand.
O’er the world a star is sweetly gleaming,
Now come the wisemen from out of the Orient land.
The King of kings lay thus lowly manger;
In all our trials born to be our friends.
He knows our need, our weakness is no stranger,
Behold your King! Before him lowly bend!
Behold your King! Before him lowly bend!Truly He taught us to love one another,
His law is love and His gospel is peace.
Chains he shall break, for the slave is our brother.
And in his name all oppression shall cease.
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,
With all our hearts we praise His holy name.
Christ is the Lord! Then ever, ever praise we,
His power and glory ever more proclaim!
His power and glory ever more proclaim!Placide Cappeau (1808-1877)
Happy Christmas week, everyone!  Many of us will be having our family gatherings this weekend, and this poem is a wonderful reminder to all of us as we strive to make this week special for our families and homes.
1 CORINTHIANS 13Â ~ A CHRISTMAS VERSION ~
author unknownIf I decorate my house perfectly with plaid bows, strands of twinkling
lights and shiny balls, but do not show love,
I’m just another decorator. If I slave away in the kitchen, baking dozens of Christmas cookies,
preparing gourmet meals and arranging a beautifully adorned mealtime,
but do not show love,
I’m just another cook.If I work at the soup kitchen, carol in the nursing home
and give all that I have to charity,
but do not show love,
it profits me nothing. If I trim the spruce with shimmering angels and crocheted snowflakes,
attend a myriad of holiday parties and sing in the choir’s cantata…
but do not focus on Christ,
I have missed the point.Love stops the cooking to hug the child.
Love sets aside the decorating to kiss the husband.
Love is kind, though harried and tired.
Love doesn’t envy another’s home that has coordinated Christmas china and table linens.
Love doesn’t yell at the kids to get out of the way, but is thankful they are there to be in the way.
Love doesn’t give only to those who are able to give in return, but rejoices in giving to those who can’t.
Love bears all things,
believes all things,
hopes all things,
and endures all things.
Love never fails.
Video games will break, pearl necklaces will be lost, golf clubs will rust,
but giving the gift of love will endure.
Isn’t that wonderful?
Much love to each of you~
Years ago a new “Night Before Christmas” poem circulated through emails (this was before blogs came upon the scene – can we even remember way back then???). Â That poem made a wonderful point about the busy-ness we face during Christmas time and the truth that it is often those same “Christmas” activities that drown out God’s call to keep Christmas focused on Jesus. Â No one knows who originally wrote the poem, but it has always stirred something within me. Â Several years ago, the Lord gave me some adaptations to make to it according to my own personal convictions, and continues to use it in my life year after year.
The Days before Christmas
Original author of the poem is unknown.
Adaptations were made by Jennifer Walker.
That was supposed to be the end of this blog post. Â But as I was typing the last lines, a 2013 “this is my life now” version of the poem popped in my head.
Just a few more days until our first family gathering will take place here, two more days until the teacher gifts need to be finished and delivered, four more until the church gifts need to be finished and delivered, the house is a mess, not to mention that I never fully finished decorating my porch for Christmas. There are still remnants of fall holding their own next to the red and greenery…  Ugggg….  I was SO WAY AHEAD… then life happened, and now I’m in continual catch-up mode.  The one thing I have done right, by God’s grace alone, He has helped me come when He has called me, and I’ve sought and found Jesus during this Christmas season.
And He has been teaching me that eventually, one way or another, those gifts will be finished and be delivered to their recipients, meals will be prepared, the house will be cleaned up, and my porch will survive the war between simultaneous fall and Christmas decor. Â Those things will happen, in time, as the Lord helps me – even if it’s down to the last-minute. Â But those things aren’t the most important things about Christmas. Â HE is. Â The Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, and Prince of Peace is teaching me to focus on the promise that if I will seek Him first, and set my heart upon His advent, the other things of “Christmas” will either fall into place, or fall off the list.
I’m wondering if anyone else is in the same situation I’m in right now? Â If so I offer to you, fresh from my mind and heart, my 2013 Real-Life version of “The Night Before Christmas.”
The 2013 This is My Life One Week Before Christmas Version
‘Twas the week before Christmas and all through this house,Â
I’m stirring and hurrying like a wild little mouse…
The coffee is brewing, the tree lights are on.
I’m answering emails on computer and phone.
I thought in the fall that I’d be way ahead,
that gifts would be wrapped and stored under the bed.
But life rarely looks like it does in my dreams
And I’m always late and behind, so it seems.
So now here we are, with seven days till
the shopping and wrapping must stop and stand still.
What to do next? On which list should I start?
I’ve been meeting with Jesus, preparing my heart.
And as for the rest… He’s teaching me to say
if nothing looks perfect, it’s really OK.
With the help of the Lord, I’ll do what I can
and leave the rest of “Christmas” in His capable hand.
To cherish this moment, to  embrace each new day,
to trust in the Lord and not question His way,
Is as sugar and cream to a black cup of joe –
The aroma of Jesus wherever I go.

Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions.
Don’t worry about missing out.
You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met.Matthew 6:33, MSG
Seeking and finding Jesus, and helping others in our lives to seek and find Him… If we could accomplish just this, then Christmas will be an eternal success.  Much love to you all~
If you have ever been in or around Mississippi churches, chances are that you’ve been in a church that has been served and blessed by this dear man. Â Bro. Bob (Robert) Self was my first Mississippi pastor, and the one who played a pivotal role in my young walk with the Lord. Â After many years and lots of changes, God brought Bro. Bob back into my life as our interim pastor here at FBC Cleveland, and it has been a joy and a privilege to sit under his teaching or around the dinner table with him again. Â Many of you will know him through revivals he has preached, or the churches he has shepherded.
On his last Sunday with us in Cleveland, we taped a two-part interview. Â I’ll post part two next week.
We love you, Bro. Bob. Â Thank you for your faithfulness to our Faithful God.
