Y’all…this is a post that I hadn’t planned on writing. Though I believe deeply in the sanctity of human life from the womb to the tomb, I have generally tried to keep SmellingCoffee.com posts from being too political or alienating.
But the subject of abortion is more than a political issue, and with so much information being shared these days, I wanted to offer some truth, along with beautiful grace from God’s Word on this most important issue.
I can’t articulately argue the legal jargon of the laws, but I can share what I’ve seen from the experience of being in ministry with and to women for the past 30 years
I have watched women struggle under difficult pregnancies and circumstances where abortion seemed to be the best, only, or simplest of solutions.
I’ve also watched women grieve making that “choice” almost immediately after the deed is done. I’ve heard laments like, “If I had only known what this would really be like…” or “If I could go back and do it again, I would never have chosen this…”
I’ve seen holidays like Mother’s Days, abortion date anniversaries, and special days with their current children clouded with a deep-down reminder of their choice, grief, and shame…
Then again, I’ve witnessed women who have gone through Biblical post-abortion counseling or programs, and today they are thriving in life… some even being used as a voice for the unborn. (Check out these stories below.)
Grace and Hope after an abortion – A four-part series on Revive Our Hearts Inside the church there is a lot of pain among women who have had an abortion. Find out why women need to find healing, grace, and hope. God is willing to forgive every sin, including ending a child’s life. One woman shares her wrenching story of abortion, forgiveness, and healing.
It is with love that I offer this truth:
A mother’s “right to choose” is a lie perpetuated by Satan, himself.
Psalm 139 is a most definitive defense for life. The entire Psalm speaks of God’s knowledge and concern of every area of our lives, and of how we can’t hide anything from the Lord. Verses 13-17 are especially telling, and comforting:
For You formed my innermost parts;
You knit me [together] in my mother’s womb.
I will give thanks and praise to You,
for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Wonderful are Your works,
And my soul knows it very well.
My frame was not hidden from You,
When I was being formed in secret,
And intricately and skillfully formed
[as if embroidered with many colors]
in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes have seen my unformed substance;
And in Your book were all written
The days that were appointed for me,
When as yet there was not one of them
[even taking shape].
How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God!
How vast is the sum of them!
Psalm 139:13-17 (Amplified Bible)
See, it is not up to us to choose when, how, or why death comes. That choice belongs to God, alone, who has already written the number of days for each person’s life, even before any of us were born. {On a side note, this is so comforting to me when I start to worry about my own children and what might/could happen to them!}
I understand that this subject and Scripture can bring up so many valid questions and discussions based on individual circumstances surrounding an unplanned pregnancy, along with lots of “Why would God allow.______” questions, too.
Friends, I don’t claim to have those answers. What I can give you is what God’s Word says about life, and His knowledge and care of you and me, from the womb to the tomb.
Any person’s “right to choose” whether another person lives or dies (young, old, or “useful”) is a lie perpetuated by Satan, himself.
It’s all part of his plan to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10) – and sometimes he uses well meaning people to justify what “feels right” over what the Word of God holds to be true.
Satan knows the deep pain and regret that follows abortions – and the downward cycle of despair it can throw a woman into. And that’s exactly where he wants her.
Often this dear one’s grief and shame will begin to erect a self-incriminating wall between herself and God, and herself and others… and in turn, end up having a negative effect on every relationship. I’ve heard stories of this over and over again.
If you are not sure where you stand on this issue, or whether you agree or disagree with me, I encourage you to check out some of the information below, compiled from some most trusted people and ministries.
According to the Us Abortion Statistics, over 40% of women under 40 have had abortions. You may personally be among that number, and if so, I pray that you are reading and receiving this blog post with all of the grace intended.
Also according to these statistics, whether or not we are aware of it, we all know many women and men who are impacted by this choice.

Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth (Revive Our Hearts) has dozens of radio programs (with written transcripts) on this subject. She always delivers Biblical truth with such grace. These audio & written programs contain informative and encouraging interviews and testimonies from experts on the subject in various fields, from those who have been involved in the abortion industry, and most importantly, from those who have experienced abortions and their aftermath .
All of these programs can be found here. But I’ve pulled out a few that I thought would be especially useful and grace-filled for wisdom, hope, and healing.
