I’m already laughing as I type this post. Do you do “Elf on the Shelf” in your home? The little pixie elf has been a part of our growing-up 1970’s Christmas decorations – but a few years ago, it resurfaced with a fun game to play along with it. I didn’t really know about “Elf on a Shelf” until Pinterest last year, so this year I thought I would start a new family tradition and the Walkers would joyfully play along.
Wrong.
It’s been an epic fail. Teenagers. What else can I say? They just didn’t go for the Elf on a Shelf idea.
I didn’t expect them to fall for the “Elf is watching and reporting back to Santa” line, but at least I thought we could mix it up a bit and each one of us could take turns hiding the elf at night. I had grand plans for our little elf. I even collected a Pinterest board all about funny things to do with the elf. But all my children said about it fell along these lines: “That thing creeps me out!” Seriously.
Sometimes they are just NO FUN!
So as I was packing for surgery, I took the elf with me. And I played it all by myself as I was recuperating at my mom’s. As I got up to walk around, I would hide the elf in what I thought were funny places. And I’d laugh all to myself. But the rest of the family: they just ignored it. So I brought the elf back home. 🙁
Even my little niece and nephews said the elf was a little “creepy” – and my brother agreed. He said, “What if I went around dressed in skinny red pants and sat and stared at people like this:” (then he posed like the elf. I couldn’t help but take a picture and put a hat on him!)
Somehow, when he put it that way, I kind of agree. hahaha
Then I had a brilliant idea: I played the “poor me surgery” card and along with the approval of my husband (he was just being sweet) I made a new family holiday “rule” – EVERYONE HAS TO TAKE TURNS HIDING THE ELF! Since they could see that I’ve been in obvious pain, they decided to humor Mom – and now… I think we’re actually having a little fun with it. (But shhhh… don’t tell them!)
And seeing my family have fun and be goofy… that, my friends, certainly makes me smile! (So do these cute Elf ideas from Pinterest. haha)
If you do “Elf on the Shelf” – chime in and tell us some of the things you’ve done with your elf that makes you smile. I’m always up for more fun and goofy ideas! 😉

I think the Elf on the Shelf is a cute idea. Not sure I could get it to fly in my house either. Of course, it’s just hubby and I home right now, but my oldest daughter comes home on the 13th for the month. Maybe then???

You make me smile Jennifer! No, I have to say I’ve not done the elf thing but it sure looks like fun. 🙂
So glad you are recovering well. I think the best place to shop is online, avoiding the crowds.
Blessings and love,
Debbie
